Rookie MotoGP rider Bradley Smith has tweeted a gruesome picture of his little finger which he ‘destroyed’ after suffering a heavy fall in practice for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.
Remarkably, the Oxford-born rider was brave enough to ride in the race at Mugello, coming home in ninth place despite the hideous injury and also suffering a hairline fracture to his wrist when his left arm became trapped under his Tech 3 Yamaha.
Smith, a team-mate of Britain’s Cal Crutchlow, was admirably philosophical about his stomach-churning wound which will require a skin graft.

Courageous: Smith was able to get back on his bike and finish ninth
‘It’s pretty open and I have damaged some tendons in there I am going to have to have a skin graft. But all in all, considering the crash, and where it was on the track, I got away with it lightly.’
Spanish rider Marc Marquez also suffered a nasty crash in Friday practice as he was caught out on the damp track while travelling at 175mph.
Jorge Lorenzo went on register his third successive win at Mugello to revive his hopes of defending his title.
Meanwhile, Marquez came off his Repsol Honda again with three laps to go – his fourth crash of the weekend - allowing Crutchlow to snatch third place to become the first British rider to claim back-to-back podium finishes in MotoGP in 26 years.
